If you thought Deepak Hooda's IPL debut against Kings XI was a fluke, he proved his qualities once again with an even more impressive all round performance. Hooda and Tambe were the only RR bowlers who managed to keep a check on runs, as all the DD batsmen contributed in setting up a mammoth target of 185, raising hopes of ending their 10 match losing streak in the IPL. It looked so with RR struggling to get the scoring rate up and losing wickets at regular intervals. Rahane provided the solidity at the top, but it was Hooda's innings of 54 from 25 balls, that enabled RR to secure their second win in two matches.
The Indian rookies Mayank Agarwal and Shreyas Iyer played impressive innings as DD made a brisk start at their home ground. Agarwal was the aggressor at the start while Iyer took over once his opening partner was dismissed by Tambe. Duminy played the anchorman role well batting through the innings, while Yuvraj Singh and Angelo Mathews provided the fireworks at the end.Faulkner had a day to forget as he gave away 55 runs in his four overs. In fact only the spinners managed to impress, while why Tambe didn't complete his allotted four overs is anybody's guess, with the pacers being hammered all around the ground.
When Steve Smith was dismissed cheaply, it looked as if RR were in big trouble. The spin duo of Thahir and Mishra were stiffling the Royals for runs as well as picking wickets to leave RR at 78/4, needing more than a 100 runs in 9 overs. But in came Hooda and changed the course of the match . But when Thahir dismissed both him and Faulkner in the 19th over, leaving Southee and Chris Morris to get 12 runs in the final over. Both of them kept steady heads getting a boundary each off Angelo Mathews helping RR to a win in the final ball as DD equals the longest streak of Pune Warriors at 11 losses.
